Environmental Department
The Environmental Department provides multiple tasks
in order to protect the Environment in and around Poarch Creek. Some of
the programs the department performs are monitoring the waterways on a
weekly basis to ensure they are safe for recreational purposes; conducting
clean-out of old chemicals in schools where tribal children attend; forming
partnerships with local schools on environmental projects; pick-up paper
and cardboard from offices for recycling, after which it is baled for shipment
on a weekly basis; clean out rivers and streams as needed when illegal
dumping occurs; periodically conduct an electronic appliance recycling
disposal operation; assist the Tribe in control burning on large acreage of
longleaf Pine and bog habitat; monitor invasive species control program;
monitor construction compliance on reservation and trust land; teach
environmental classes to school children as needed; assist EPA RCRA and
Solid Waste officials in conducting compliance assistance visits to Tribal
enterprises as called upon; study and protect wildlife habitat on Tribal
lands; conduct fish tissue sampling as needed; assist in disposal of used
cooking oil; construct habitats for wildlife in order to increase the number
and variety in tribal forests; establish partnerships with U.S. Fish & Wildlife,
Alabama Natural Heritage, Auburn University and other entities to assist
in these many tasks; screen grants and apply for them as needed, initiate
budgets, then make certain all objectives and goals are executed properly
in a timely manner.
